My name is Alan Cockerell. I’m a waiter. I work at a hotel near Loch Ness. I live in a cottage near the hotel. I finish work in the hotel at one o'clock in the morning. Then I walk home with two friends. They work at the hotel, too. One night in 1988 I worked late. I finished work at two o'clock. I walked home alone, because my friends were already at home. Most people in Britain live in houses, not flats. Usually only one family lives in one house. A typical house has got two floors. The kitchen and the living room are downstairs. Some houses have a dining room downstairs, too. Upstairs there are two, three or four bedrooms and a bathroom. The toilet is usually in the bathroom. A lot of houses have another toilet downstairs. Most houses have a back garden and a lot also have a front garden.
A lot of young people in Britain do community work as part of their school work. They work for one or two afternoons a week. Sometimes they do community work on Saturday mornings, too. They do a lot of different things. Some help old people or disabled people. They go shopping for them, iron clothes or wash up.
